Engine oils for passenger cars are designed completely differently from those for commercial vehicles. However, there are similarities, as the new TopTec Truck 6150 5W-30 from LIQUI MOLY demonstrates.

Designers of car and commercial vehicle engines share the trend towards even thinner oils. Around ten years ago, 10W-40 was still used as the standard viscosity in a truck with the current year of manufacture, but now Euro V and VI engines are filled with a 5W-30 lubricant. A further parallel: "Engine oil has transitioned from a mere operating fluid into a liquid component," Klaus Stahl explains in his role as Sales Manager of the Commercial Vehicles Division at LIQUI MOLY. Oils, such as the new Toptec Truck 6150 5W-30, are developed to perfectly match new engine generations. "This also increasingly leads to the new lubricant not being backwards compatible. It must therefore not be used in vehicles with older engines, as damage cannot be ruled out as a result of the low viscosity," Stahl adds.

Fuel consumption in contrast to engine mileage

Unlike passenger cars, operators of truck fleets must keep an eye on more than just the CO2 footprint and thus fuel consumption. “The mileage of the engine has priority,” the commercial vehicle sales manager explains. "A 5W-30 lubricant like our new Toptec Truck 6150 offers an excellent combination of low viscosity and low wear. In other words, the cost-benefit ratio is very good." There are also even thinner oils, such as LIQUI MOLY Profi Commercial Vehicle Engine Oil 5W-20 LA. However, when switching from a 5W-30 oil to an even lower viscosity oil, the reduction in consumption is well below 1 percent. “By the way, it is not the viscosity that is the benchmark, but the approval of the vehicle manufacturer,” Stahl emphasizes, highlighting the added service of LIQUI MOLY: "Our digital oil guide and our technical hotline safely guide our customers through the sheer amount of available lubricants. There is also our sales team specialized in commercial vehicles. For example, it advises customers on how to put together the right lubricant mix." From the point of view of commercial vehicle sales manager Klaus Stahl, there is something else that makes LIQUI MOLY stand out: “With the exception of a single oil, the formula of which the development company still exclusively keeps, we offer all engine oils required in the commercial vehicle sector with the corresponding approvals in our range, and thus provide the broadest range.”

At Automechanika, taking place from 10 to September 14 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, LIQUI MOLY will also be showcasing its performance potential in commercial vehicles to the specialist audience – including all the latest news. The venue is also new: For the first time, the company based in Ulm on the river Danube will be at Stand B01 in Hall 12.
